The vision, mission and goals of the department
Department of Geography Undergraduate (bachelor’s) morning studies in the department began in the academic year 1987–1988 and have continued to the present day. The postgraduate (master’s) program was launched in the academic year 2014–2015. Department Vision The Department of Geography is a scientific and educational unit that seeks to prepare academic cadres capable of excellence in university education and scientific research according to high-quality academic and scientific standards. Geography is a spatial science that employs description, analysis, and reasoning as essential tools to understand the spatial relationships in the distribution of geographical phenomena, whether human or natural. The department aims to introduce students to their contemporary world in terms of the distribution and variation of geographical phenomena, the problems and outcomes arising from them, and the geographer's potential contribution to improving these conditions. In addition, geographical knowledge enables students to understand, analyze, and interpret various phenomena of our time in areas such as politics, transportation, economy, population, and nature in its diverse fields — all for greater engagement in modern life. Department Mission To prepare specialized and scientifically and educationally qualified personnel to contribute to improving education in Iraq in the field of geography, as well as to train researchers capable of producing theoretical and applied research that supports the progress of the scientific and educational movement in line with the university's role in developing the capacities of society and its institutions. Department Goals · Providing Outstanding Education: The Department of Geography aims to offer high-quality education in both theoretical and practical aspects of geography, helping students understand and apply geographical concepts and methodologies. · Advancing Scientific Research: The department seeks to promote scientific research in various fields of geography, including environmental geography, population geography, transportation geography, and tourism geography. This research enriches knowledge and contributes to the development of geographic curricula and theories. · Training Students in Practical Skills: The department aims to equip students with practical skills needed for various fields, such as geographic data analysis, use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing tools, and field studies. · Raising Awareness of Environmental and Social Issues: The department works to increase awareness of environmental and social issues such as climate change, sustainable development, and urban planning. It aims to educate students on the importance of environmental protection and sustainability and their impact on both local and global communities. · Enhancing International Cooperation and Global Culture: The Department of Geography aims to promote cultural exchange and international cooperation in the field of geography. This includes student and researcher exchanges, knowledge sharing with universities and educational institutions in other countries, and fostering global understanding and collaboration in solving global geographical challenges.
